Lady Bird is a remarkably charming movie and is a coming of age story that instead of focusing on the love between the main character Lady Bird played by Saoirse Ronan and another boy, it focuses on the relationship and love between mother and daughter. Director Greta Gerwig proves to be a force with this movie because the movie is so different and so amazingly well done, it avoids every possible cliche that is present in a teenage coming of age movie. You feel as though you are just a fly on the wall watching this family and these people live their lives.
As for the cast, there is no weak link, it gives off Breakfast Club vibes because there is a character that almost everyone can relate to. There is such sincerity in the movie and in the main characters because you feel as though you are driving along this road with mother and daughter, and how they push each other so much to be the best version of themselves that they basically drive eachother crazy throughout the whole movie. Both Lady Bird and her mother think that one another hate each other when deep down they each love each other like either one could understand, and truly is a representation of not only my family but many families.
It is a movie that will make you laugh and cry, and has such a magical sense of humor. Laurie Metcalf and Saoirse Ronan are the true stars of the show here. The whole movie Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan) is defying her mother and her school and wanting to prove everyone wrong, and does so by applying to east coast schools without her mom knowing. Saoirse’s performance is outstanding and it seems as though she is not even acting rather than just playing herself. Her mother (Laurie Metcalf) is tough on her daughter because as she stated in the movie “my mother was an abusive alcoholic” so she feels as though she needs to be the bad guy or tell it like it is to her daughter so that she can be the best version of herself. Laurie plays this role with passion and conviction and is someone that is so unlikeable but so loveable at the same time, as she only wants the best for her daughter, and loves her so much that she may be cynical at times but it’s always all in love.
The final scene was truly a magical moment and shows us how we all can appreciate our mothers and even though we may not always show it, there is that one moment that makes us realize all the hard work they do for us. Lady Bird is truly my favorite movie of the 2017 as there is no weak point at all in this movie because you leave with a full heart and don’t want the journey to end. That to me screams a good movie, and Lady Bird delivers in my opinion some of the strongest performances of the 2017 and is truly my favorite movies of that the year.
