Review: Bird Box | Tense and Brutal, But Beautifully Executed

December 25, 2018

Bird Box is an incredibly sophisticated Netflix movies that brings the thrills, chills, and a lot of emotions in between. Sandra Bullock presents a raw and emotionally gripping performance throughout the film.

The film jumps back and forth from past to present to put together the story in the way of a puzzle and is pieced together beautifully. Sandra Bullock plays Malorie who is a woman that is tough as nails. We start to see the layers of her character peeled back throughout the film.

Malorie’s way of navigating through this new world is riveting and tense. Everyone is terrified to go outside because there are monsters that if you look at them make you commit suicide. So people have to cover their eyes when they go outside.

The monsters take on an appearance that we never see but we know they turn into your greatest fears or saddest moments of your life. They drive you to take your own life so that you don’t have to see it anymore.

Bird Box presents us with a post-apocolypic world were we cannot see the monsters and that is truly terrifying. There are moments in the movie where it is hard to watch because you are just too scared of how the events will unfold.

During the film it did something that thrillers or horror movies extremely rarely do to me and that is make me cover my eyes. That’s because Bird Box creates sheer terror and tenseness that makes it hard to bear.

The other cast members do a great job here because they create the base for Malorie to become the character she does during the movie, and the mother she is during that time.

A moment towards the end of the movie made my hands physically shake and force tears out of my eyes. You end up caring so much about the characters that you don’t want to see them die or fail.

The writing, cinematography, and performances in Bird Box are stunning and surprising. This movie was extremely successful in achieving its goal of creating an atmosphere that is tense and terrifying.

Someone that I think got overlooked in the movie was Sarah Paulson. She provides us with a character that shapes and dictates a lot of Malorie’s motives through the rest of the film. Her character gives us the idea that she is the last person left that truly cares about Malorie.

Therefore, we appreciate and already connect to Sarah Paulson as a character because she is so kind and happy – the opposite of Malorie.

Bird Box is another example of how streaming services like Netflix are starting to dominate and compete with the movie industry.

We can see that this movie is truly something special and will turn into a classic. Bird Box was visually stunning, emotionally thrilling and stimulating, and leaves the audience terrified to just step foot outside.

I give Bird Box an A+
