Euphoria is an astounding feet that makes the ordinary extraordinary. The ability for this show to take subject matter that we’ve seen so many times and turn it into something we’ve never seen before makes the show truly special.
Euphoria centers around a group of teens in high school searching for who they are and where they belong in life. It doesn’t gloss over struggles, but instead highlights them and shows that none of us are perfect and even though each person is going through something different, we’re all connected.
I think what makes Euphoria so mesmerizing is like I said, it’s the same story of teens trying to find their purpose, but the subject matter is actually taken seriously. For most of us our teen years are the most important and impactful in our lives. This show doesn’t shy away from that, and really shows all the dirty details within this group of people.
Most coming-of-age stories center around one particular character, but Euphoria has so many different main characters and we are attached to each one of them. This is something i’ve never seen before. The ability for Euphoria to not seem messy with as many characters taking center stage shows how good it is.
The show contains graphic violence, graphic nudity, graphic language, and graphic drug use, so be aware of that when you’re watching and who you’re watching with. That being said it was refreshing to see a show that didn’t cower away from these dirty secrets people have, and how traumatized some peoples home lives are. These harsh realities are something we have to deal with and to see a show that explores all of it was bracing.
The show allows each and every character to have their “moment” and I think the most powerful scene is when Zendaya’s character Rue is begging at her friends door for drugs, it’s just a heartbreaking scene that she executes with such precision.
It’s not always perfect, but the show definitely comes close in my opinion. Euphoria wraps in so many emotions into each episode and is a special journey. You’re riding the highest of highs and the lowest of lows and feeling every moment of it.
Zendaya definitely gives the performance of her career as Rue in my opinion, and has such dynamic scenes. Hunter Schafer as Jules is pure magic and mesmerizing in every way.
The Chemistry between Rue and Jules is remarkable and shows us how we may love someone so deeply, but that person may not be the right fit. Finding yourself is a terribly hard and painful journey for some people and Euphoria shows that with incredible depth.
I love how the show depicts that struggle in a way that isn’t too dramatic or traumatizing, and instead makes it seem so real, which helps the show succeed in connecting with viewers in a hyperrealistic way. Euphoria is easily my top 3 favorite shows right now and is an incredibly important narrative being told today.
Euphoria may be hard to watch at some points, but is an extremely empathetic show, with stunning visuals, challenging the narrative and shining a light on the world around us. Although the show presents a glittery outside it’s an incredibly original, blunt, heartfelt and heartbreaking tale that deserves to be seen.
I give Euphoria an A+
