Review: Knives Out | A Scintillating Murder Mystery With Great Depth

December 7, 2019

Knives Out is one of the best movies of the year so far, and not only delivers a stellar cast, but an intriguing and tangled mystery. In an era of heavy nostalgia filled with excessive remakes and sequels Knives Out is a refreshing new story.

Starting with the cast, the performances are spectacular and you believe every minute of this excessively dramatic family. Each one of them lands the serious moments and the comedic moments perfectly. The standouts for me are Ana De Armas and Chris Evans. Probably because they get the most screen time, but also because they have the most depth and jaw dropping moments.

The movie plays as a classic murder mystery and really brings back the charm of that genre. Knives Out not only keeps you guessing, but keeps you invested in the story for the whole movie.

I was anticipating this movie for a while and it did not let me down. The cinematography is done so well and makes the movie so grandiose and gives it this luxury feel. There are shots where you feel you’re looking through a magnifying glass which matches the theme of the movie brilliantly.

Knives Out was a fresh new perspective because it allowed a genre that was so prevalent at one point to be reborn. The story gripped me from the very first scene and makes the audience invested fully in the characters. You’re constantly curious about each character’s motives and goals as the family has many hidden secrets.

It’s such a fun movie that you can tell was made with love, and there’s so much comedic relief that is witty and timed perfectly. The film is an elevated clue game that plays off of cynicism and is just pure gold in how tight and straightforward it is, which lifts Knives Out to extraordinary heights.

The film was a crazy twisted ride and with each scene the knife sinks deeper and deeper. It’s a movie that feels like a classic story adapted to modern times. You can’t take your eyes off the screen, can’t keep your mind from thinking about the movie, and Knives Out is truly one of the most exciting and refreshing movies of the year so far.

I give Knives Out an A+
