Review: Birds of Prey : And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn | Action Packed and Fiercely Feminist

February 23, 2020

There are going to be people that hate this movie, but honestly I loved it. Most of the criticism comes from the fact that it’s unapologetically radically feminist and paints men as mysoginistic.

I think that this movie does clearly have no good male characters, but I don’t think that it hurts the movie in any way honestly. To me it only makes the movie stronger with its message that all of these women have been beat up by these powerful men for too long. It’s not a movie that was meant to please male comic book lovers and really wanted to create a fresh vision for the genre.

What I really liked about this movie was there were so many good action sequences. This is something we don’t get enough of, is women in good actions sequences. There’s women superheroes, but this was pure gritty and dirty fighting, and I loved seeing strong women taking center stage.

Now the movie isn’t perfect by any means. There are flaws and it’s in the way the story is told through a lot of voice over and just in your face obvious statements. Sometimes it can feel a little choppy and take you out of a really awesome moments. It’s obvious to see these flaws, but the movie doesn’t try to be something that it’s not and I appreciate that.

Birds of Prey is a movie that really wanted to be a full female troop, but in reality it’s Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn who’s the star of the show. They were really trying to play up the girl power aspect of the movie and in reality there was only one star of the show. To me that’s not a problem because Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn is amazing, but if they had less characters we would’ve had more time to focus on the better ones.

Aside from Harley Quinn there are two other characters that are great here, and that’s Huntress and Black Canary. Huntress provides great comedic relief with being so awkward, and the scene where she’s practicing her name in the mirror is hilarious. Black Canary has some awesome action sequences, she also provides us a character with heart, and her relationship with Harley is pure gold.

Birds of Prey has so many great lines and the funhouse scene at the end was so cool and different. Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn is amazing and this film really gives a breath of fresh air to the comic book movie genre, and is it always successful? No, but it’s a damn good time at the movies and allows us to see an all female line up really take center stage in a great way.

I give Birds of Prey an A-
