House of Gucci | Big Style, Rushed Story

November 27, 2021

This was one of my most anticipated movies of the year and while Gaga lived up to those expectations the story felt like it was missing something. Now don’t get me wrong House of Gucci is a largely entertaining movie. The style and locations are awe inspiring.

The best part of this movie hands down is Lady Gaga. She cements herself as one of the most talented people in the entertainment industry here. She goes for a full character and it truly pays off. where House of Gucci truly soars is when we focus on Patrizia Reggiani and how she influenced the Gucci family. Gaga captures your attention every moment she’s on the screen and shows how powerful of a women Patrizia was and how much influence she had.

Another stand out to me was Jared Leto as Paulo Gucci. His performance was so out there and genuine. You can tell he took time and care to think about how to portray this Gucci family member. He was able to show the more eccentric sides of Gucci and how that was all pushed aside because of the “brand”.

House of Gucci has it positives but some of its negatives made me really disappointed. I just felt that the ending of the movie was rushed with no care at all. Not to mention it’s the most pivotal moment of the movie and Lady Gaga’s Patrizia was almost completely absent from the third act.

That’s where the movie really lost me because this is a movie about how Patrizia changed the face of Gucci and of course how she coordinated the assassination of her husband. Those decisions were all made off screen and instead we were following Adam Drivers character Maurizio Gucci instead. And while Adam Driver was fine he didn’t have the flare or charisma that Gaga had.

To leave out the most important moments of Patrizia coming to the realization she wants to kill her husband, and how she got there, to me was a big mistake. It made the ending seem careless and like an afterthought, which was very disappointing. They could have easily added another hour into this movie. While that would make it a four hour movie I wouldn’t complain because it would have made it a juggernaut of a film.

I still highly recommend seeing House of Gucci because it is a very entertaining film. There’s a lot going on and if they would have narrowed their focus more heavily on Patrizia this would have been solid. A lot of really good things come out of House of Gucci and I still really enjoyed myself, I just had such high expectations I feel I was expecting a more clean film. House of Gucci has a lot of flare and style, but sadly that fire flickers out towards the end.

I give House of Gucci a B
