Pig is an incredibly dark, haunting and frankly depressing movie, all held together by an outstanding performance from Nicholas Cage. It’s a short movie that packs a massive punch in its short runtime. This is all because the story is crafted so well that every moment you’re hanging on a thread and wanting to know more.
Nicholas Cage gives in my opinion his career best performance. We all know the character and the meme that is Nicholas Cage. But, I think that we sometimes forget that this man is an Oscar winner and is truly an amazing actor.
We follow this once renowned chef who secludes himself in the woods with his truffle pig. Once his pig has been stolen from him he embarks on a journey to find his pig that leads him down a dark road of self reflection, abuse and trauma all reintroduced.
it’s a terrible traumatic journey and at times can be hard to watch. But, the movie does a great job of showing and not telling. We are so often showed what happened here and while it can be hard to watch they’re showing the brutal truth.
The cinematography is breathtaking. It perfectly encapsulates the tone and mood of the film. It’s dark, yet beautiful and tender. While the movie can be extremely brutal to watch it’s also extremely tender and careful.
Pig is such a beautiful story about love and what loving someone or something can mean to a person. That’s such a hard topic to get right. It’s been used and used again, but Pig does a great job of providing a fresh perspective to that idea.
That’s what makes the movie so special is that it provides such a unique twist and fresh take on the idea of love. It’s a tragic story that also provides such closure to a moving story. Who knew a story about a man and his pig could be so moving, so give a try and you wont regret it.
I give Pig an A+
