Thor Love and Thunder is more or less a set up for Thor 5 which isn’t terrible it just doesn’t give the movie enough legs to stand on its own. The comedy makes the movie incredibly entertaining. Not to mention, as is the case with Marvel, the action is fast paced and well done.
I personally don’t think that this installment is as good as the last – Ragnarok – but I definitely think it’s a worthy follow up to establish the character of Thor. Here we are expanding his story and is character as a whole.
We really get a sense here that Thor is just a cool guy and someone we’d all want to hang out with. Which is rooted in the main message here of family and loyalty. Chris Hemsworth really is Thor and brings such charisma and charm to the role.
All of this being said I really hope that in the next Thor they’re able to bring even more action and more stakes while still keeping the lighthearted nature we’ve come to love about Thor. Natalie Portman and Tessa Thompson are lovely here and bring a good amount of excitement with them.
I wish Natalie Portman as Lady Thor had more extravagant action sequences, but it paid off in the end and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie really didn’t have too much to do which was a little disappointing.
Let’s talk about Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher. AMAZING! He is such a good villain with such great motives. He’s not only someone you can understand, but also fear at the same time. He provides such a real threat and real stakes that I truly wish he was able to stay around a lot longer.
Overall, Thor: Love and Thunder provides us with a successful middle installment that delivers big laughs and some good action, but lacks some overarching meaning. I trust Taika Waititi to work his magic and deliver a insane third Thor movie which seems to be promised. It’s a good time at the movies and something that provides Marvel fans with a lot of fun things to think about going forward.
I give Thor: Love and Thunder a B+
