Evil Dead Rise is the fifth movie in the Evil Dead franchise and it brings its gruesome and evil nature front and center on this entry. The stakes are high as always and you’re constantly wondering to yourself how our characters are going to get themselves out of this situation. Which most of them never do.
This movie definitely will not be for everyone, but for horror lovers and lovers of the evil dead movies it will be a huge hit. And truly from a film making perspective it brings flare and originality to its cinematography and story. You feel the eerie nature just oozing all over this film throughout and its set design of this old rundown apartment building just builds on this creepy environment and terrifying nature of the film.
There are some really interesting and original cinematic shots in this movie that truly embody the first films which made them so famous. We have this cool fisheye sequence that’s done through a peephole which is really cool and adds to the fact that you’re just watching these atrocities happen. The movie pushes the boundaries and it’s meant to disturb you which it fully achieves this goal while providing an anxiety inducing experience.
This is all contributed to the masterful performances from the entire cast. Our main character Ellie (possessed right away) provides a bone chilling performance that never lets up. She’s able to provide us with this extremely evil character while we also remember the kind and gentle character she was before the possession. The way her body moves and her facial expressions are enough to make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. The way the actress is able to manipulate her body and contort it into these menacing and disturbing positions is brilliant.
The rest of the cast including the child actors do a great job of dragging us along this hellish ride with them. They are asked to a lot of really tough work here and they execute it to terrifying perfection. All we can do is just sit back and watch these gruesome and terrifying acts unfold all around them. That brings us to the kills and the gore.
These movies have always pushed the boundaries in terms of violence. And this is no exception of that rule. You’re left wincing in pain and just gasping at the things your seeing on the screen. From a cheese grader, to a tattoo gun, to glass, to maggots there is no shortage of nastiness that one would expect from an evil dead movie.
Evil Dead Rise provides us with a terrifying stomach churning, and bone chilling movie experience. You leave the theater shocked and with your heart pounding from the immense anxiety and terror the film causes for its audiences. It’s a well crafted bloody good time at the movies if you ask me!
