Review: Bohemian Rhapsody | A Toe Tapping Heartfelt Biopic

December 27, 2018

Bohemian Rhapsody is a charming homage to Freddie Mercury and Queen that provides an extraordinary in depth look into the bands lives and how they came to be the most well known rock group in the world.

What I loved so much about this movie other than the music was how they were trying to change the narrative of Freddie from negative to positive.

Freddie was always a man that was perceived to not be proud of his identity, when in reality he was confused himself, and didn’t want himself to be paraded around as a mascot.

The major thing that bothered me about the film was that they made Freddie overly dramatic and exuberant when in reality he wasn’t that way for the majority of his career.

Aside from that the movie was charming and extremely entertaining. It’s hard to not enjoy a movie filled with so much Queen music. The music scenes were absolutely stunning and make it hard to keep still. Rami Malek does a great job emulating Mercury’s onstage persona.

Rami Malek gives one of his best performances and truly embodies Freddie Mercury’s personal struggles and his brilliance as a musician. He makes us understand the struggles Freddie was going through in his life and how he used music to escape.

Bohemian Rhapsody embodies not only rock and roll at the time and how Queen was trying to be innovative, but it also details social problems during the time.

The Live Aid sequence is absolutely stunning. The performance is said by many to be one of the best in rock and roll performances in history. The scene in the movie encapsulates the magic and true power of that performance and how Queen truly was such an innovative and special band.

The fact that they were able to emulate Mercury’s every move so perfectly without it seeming robotic is astonishing.

That is really all credited to Malek’s performance and the fact he would do hours of study and then just free ball it on set, that allowed him to really become mercury during scenes and performances.

The movie does a great job of humanizing a man who was demonized, and can now be seen in a different light. It didn’t come without its flaws, but it did the big things well and that’s what really matters.

The movie is charming, loud in the right ways, and creates a fun journey that we have never been able to take before.

This is real life, not just fantasy, Malek’s performance of Mercury makes the film great. It’s also hard not to enjoy a movie that is full of Queen music and because it’s well executed makes it even better.

I give Bohemian Rhapsody a B+
