Review: Aquaman | An Action Packed Visual Masterpiece Hoping to Revive the DC Universe

January 17, 2019

Aquaman doesn’t just bring stellar action sequences, but stunning special effects that create a captivating world that you want to see more of. The movie draws you in from the beginning with wonderful characters and stunning effects.

There wasn’t a moment during the movie where you weren’t captivated by what you were seeing on the screen. There was one problem I had with the movie.

The main aquaman villain in the franchise is black manta. Every time I saw him on screen I found myself disappointed and saw him as too petty and childish in his motives, and his action sequences were not all that impressive either. That’s really upsetting to me since he is the main villain in the franchise and will be for the next movie.

Aquaman and Wonder Woman are truly saving the DC universe providing us with characters and worlds that we love. Jason Momoa does a great job of embodying Aquaman and really allowing himself to follow the script but break off a little bit and be kind of goofy – because he is a goofy guy.

The ability for director James Wan to make us really believe they are underwater without it seeming fake is truly amazing. He creates an echo in the voices whenever they are underwater that really enhances that believability.

There is a scene where they are going to this place called the trench. We see Wan’s horror roots come out a little bit in this sequence and is truly my favorite sequence in the film as it’s not only tense but it is visually stunning. When Aquaman jumps into the water and there’s a shot of the red light and all the creatures following him and was just outstanding.

The relationship between Aquaman, his brother Ocean Master, and their mother played by Nicole Kidman was an interesting dynamic. The feud never seemed petty or immature instead you saw these two brothers battling to control the seas and Atlantis. It was truly a sight to be seen and the massive “war” at the end was epic!

My second favorite scene was when Aquaman and his brother battled in basically a colosseum in front of all the atlanteans and had major connections to ancient rome in that scene.

As a history buff I appreciated the many references to ancient Rome throughout the whole movie, and gave it an elevated story to the world of the ocean.

The entire cast does a great job here and really embodies the world of Atlantis and every world that lives under the seas. Mera played by Amber Heard is Aquaman’s “sidekick” and eventually his love does a great job, and really creates a relationship that we care about. What I really like about the relationship is that they are truly seen as equally powerful and influential in the things they do.

Aquaman is not only a visually stunning movie but is well executed and keeps the audience glued to the screen. Even with a little bit of a flaw it manages to work itself out to compete with Wonder Women now as the best DC movie.

I give Aquaman a B+
